Public Information and Educational Campaign | FDOT District Six Traffic Operations Creative Committee

The Purpose:

FDOT District Six Traffic Operations Department assembled a “Creative Committee” composed of FDOT staff and consultants. The Committee’s goal was to develop cost-effective, grassroots outreach methods on a variety of safety campaigns. First assembled for the 2008 Click It or Ticket campaign, the Committee’s goal was to raise the state percentage of safety belt usage to 85 percent. In 2009, the Committee was again utilized for the Impaired Driving otreach campaign. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) You Drink. You Drive. You Lose. campaign was the basis of the Committee’s outreach effort to increase awareness on the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

The Project:

During the Click It or Ticket campaign, law enforcement increased normal patrols and enforcement activities. As part of the campaign, FDOT hosted Click It or Ticket Press Conferences across the state to raise awareness of the importance of safety belt use. The Impaired Driving campaign, through a partnership with the Florida Marlins of Major League Baseball, was focused on spotlighting the truth while dispersing the myths related to driving under the influence. On all campaigns, MRG developed community partnerships with governmental agencies, academic institutions and private-sector businesses to increase outreach opportunities within a limited budget. Among these partners were South Florida Commuter Services, Jackson Health Systems, University of Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, Miami-Dade Expressway Authority and the Injury Free Coalition for Kids.

The Public:

Media Relations Group, LLC, played a large role in these FDOT District Six safety campaigns. In addition to creating the project tagline, campaign posters and e-mail blasts, the team also attended health fairs and other campaign-related events, as well as playing a major role in garnering the support of the Miami-Dade County School Board and the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization. Through the development of these various partnerships, funding for the production of collaterals was arranged and these materials were distributed to thousands of motorists and residents across South Florida.
