Public Information and Educational Campaign | FDOT Distict Six Traffic Operations Creative Committee

The Purpose:

FDOT District Six Traffic Operations Department assembled a “Creative Committee” composed of FDOT staff and consultants. The Committee’s goal was to develop cost-effective, grassroots outreach methods on a variety of safety campaigns. First assembled for the 2008 Click It or Ticket campaign, the Committee’s goal was to raise the state percentage of safety belt usage to 85 percent. In 2009, the Committee was again utilized for the Impaired Driving outreach campaign to increase awareness on the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Most recently, the Committee was utilized as part of the Put it Down campaign, reaching out to drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 regarding the dangers of distracted driving, specifically the growing epidemic of texting while behind the wheel.

The Project:

In an effort to reach its target audience, the Put it Down campaign ran from August to October, concurrent to the start of the academic year. The Committee was tasked with developing community partnerships with governmental agencies and academic institutions to maximize communications resources and coordinate various outreach events throughout Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. Among the partners that joined this campaign were University of Miami, Florida International University, Miami Dade College, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise and the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority. A key component of the campaign was having drivers complete a “Pledge to Safety” form, documenting their commitment to safe driving and to avoid texting and other forms of distraction.

The Public:

Media Relations Group, LLC, played a large role in facilitating this particular FDOT District Six safety campaign. From developing a brand for all collateral materials, MRG created all campaign posters, e-mail blasts and a campaign press kit. The team also played a key role in developing all of the partnerships and coordinating the Committee’s participation in several outreach events, as well as playing a major role in garnering the support of the Miami-Dade County School Board. Through the development of these partnerships and our participation in outreach events, materials were distributed to thousands of motorists and residents across South Florida.
