PD&E Studies | Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) SR 874/Don Shula Expressway Ramp Connector to SW 136th Street PD&E Study

The Purpose:

The general purpose of this project is to provide an access ramp from the terminus of SR 874 to SW 136th Street. This new connection to SR 874 will provide expressway access to the growing southwest Miami-Dade community, located west of Florida’s Turnpike, between SW 120th and SW 152nd Streets. This area is presently only serviced by access from/to the Florida’s Turnpike via the SW 120th Street and SW 152nd Street ramps.

The Project:

The SR 874, also known as Don Shula Expressway, currently ends at SR 821/Florida’s Turnpike. Area residents and business owners who wish to travel east by way of SR 874 must do so via the Florida’s Turnpike exit at SW 152nd Street. Alternate east-west routes within the study area include facilities such as SW 120th Street and SW 152nd Street, which are operating above capacity during peak periods due to the rapid growth of abutting residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Interchanges at these roadways with Florida’s Turnpike are also operating over capacity. This area has also seen a growth in industrial and flex-space activities where additional future growth is largely dependent upon additional provisions for roadway and expressway access. New tourist developments anticipated for Miami Metro Zoo and the adjacent area will also add to current congestion in accessing the Turnpike.

The Public:

Media Relations Group, LLC, embarked on a public involvement campaign in 2008 as part of the previous SR 874 Concept Study conducted by MDX, and this outreach effort will continue throughout the life of the project. MRG has successfully coordinated a Public Kick-off Meeting and Alternatives Workshop where the public was invited to learn about new project developments and express any questions or concerns. MRG was also responsible for developing various collateral materials and ensuring that each meeting is properly advertised and all residents are aware of the proceedings. Additionally, we maintain a thorough project record that is continually updated as new comments are received and new materials are created.
