PD&E Studies | FDOT District Bridges of the Isles PD&E Study

The Purpose:

The general objective of the Bridges of the Isles PD&E Study is to provide and document information necessary for the FDOT, in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), to reach a decision on the type of improvements for rehabilitation or replacement of the bridges at Fiesta Way, Isle of Venice Drive, Royal Palm Drive and Nurmi Drive in Broward County.

The Project:

The project study area is within a corridor that is approximately 300 feet east and west of the existing bridges. The limits of the project study area are from the intersection of Fiesta Way, Isle of Venice Drive, Nurmi Drive, Royal Palm Drive and Las Olas Boulevard, State Road (SR) 842, to the northern approach of the each bridge. The Fiesta Way Bridge, Isle of Venice Drive Bridge, Royal Palm Drive Bridge and Nurmi Drive Bridge (also known as the Nurmi Isles Neighborhood Bridges) connect the residents of the finger islands over the Las Olas Canal to the City of Fort Lauderdale. The bridges have become obsolete and are eligible for replacement through the Statewide Bridge Replacement Program due to their deficient structural rating.

The Public:

Media Relations Group, LLC, served as the main liaison between project team members and the community for this study. MRG completed the Public Involvement Plan and led the “branding process,” suggesting that we refer to the network of Bridges being studied as the “Bridges of the Isles.” MRG developed the corresponding project logo and website, www.bridgesoftheisles.com, which serves as a valuable resource for affected residents. MRG was also responsible for coordinating a Cultural Resources Committee (CRC) as part of this study, with the bridges under consideration being deemed historically significant. Knowledgeable members of the community and involved homeowners’ association representatives were invited to participate and serve as liaisons between their neighborhoods and the Department. Throughout the course of the study, MRG arranged and led three successful CRC meetings in addition to a Public and Elected Officials/Agency Kick-off Meeting, Alternatives Public Workshop and Public Hearing.
