Intelligent Transportation Systems | FDOT District Six Ramp Signaling Phase 1A and 1B

The Purpose:

Ramp signals have been added along northbound Interstate 95 (I-95) as part of Phase 1 of the 95 Express congestion management project to help regulate the rate at which vehicles enter the highway. The signals are improving traffic flow on the expressway by controlling the disruption caused by ramp traffic merging at entrances.

The Project:

On I-95, Ramp Signals are making it easier for drivers to enter the highway by making sure the number of cars merging from the ramp isn’t more than the number of gaps available for them to fit. Although not a cure for all congestion, Ramp Signals are just one of the many proven cost-effective strategies being implemented in Southeast Florida to help reduce congestion, increase traffic speeds and improve trip time reliability. Ramp Signals alternate between red and green lights. Drivers must wait for a green light before entering the interstate, one car at a time. The signal changes from red to green so motorists are constantly allowed on the interstate. Traffic sensors measure traffic speeds and volume on the interstate as well as traffic demand on the ramps. This information is processed at the SunGuide® Transportation Management Center (TMC) to determine the rates vehicles can safely and efficiently enter the interstate. Still, some drivers may have to wait slightly longer to merge onto the mainline from the entrance ramps, but their waits are generally gained back as traffic speeds on the highway itself have increased. Information gathered by FDOT shows that Phase 1A of the Ramp Signaling System has increased average travel speeds by 16 percent, thus improving the overall trip reliability of the highway.

The Public:

Media Relations Group, LLC, has taken the Ramp Signaling implementation project from conception to final execution. In preparing fact sheets, brochures and media releases in English, Spanish and Creole, MRG has made every attempt to reach out to the affected community and gather input, questions and valuable concerns. The MRG staff played a large role in coordinating the Ramp Signaling Kickoff Event, which brought together lawmakers, project engineers and members of the community at large to celebrate the introduction of such an important, landmark project. MRG provided media support services to the District Public Information Office. This involved giving interviews to Spanish media outlets, coordinating media availability events and developing press kits. MRG sees the TMC as a valuable asset to the community and strives to play as large a role as possible in their everyday public relations efforts.
