Intelligent Transportation Systems | FDOT District One Charlotte County Freeway Management System

The Purpose:

The Charlotte County Freeway Management System Project instrumented a 24-mile stretch of Interstate 75 (I-75) with a series of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices to improve highway operation and increase regional mobility in southwest Florida.

The Project:

The project‘s goal was to maximize the efficiency of I-75 by adding ITS devices that improved its overall operations and to provide drivers with real-time traffic management, incident management and traveler services on the highway. It added 30 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, 10 dynamic message signs (DMS), 49 roadway detectors, one highway advisory radio (HAR) and a radio weather information system (RWIS) along the highway from mile marker 148 to mile marker 172, within the Charlotte County limits. The project went live on March 25, 2011, and is allowing traffic operators at the District’s Southwest Interagency Facility for Transportation (SWIFT) SunGuide® Center to manage traffic 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Public:

Media Relations Group, LLC was the public involvement firm selected to support District One’s launch of this project in Charlotte County as a subconsultant to the CEI. MRG assisted in all public education efforts, including drafting and publishing a variety of documents, presentations and other materials to disseminate the project message in the community. These documents included project fact sheets, e-mail blasts, press releases and various industry articles which were published amongst stakeholders, industry professionals and the media. In addition to these materials, MRG assisted in hosting and planning a media availability day in where local news representatives were invited to cover the project launch from the SWIFT SunGuide Center as well as from the field. MRG also presented to the Traffic Incident Management (TIM) Teams as well as to Charlotte County’s Metropolitan Planning Organization to ensure stakeholder and legislative support.
